The Karmic Debt Of Jerry Dean

Audrey Marcum is probably smiling somewhere, wherever that is, if she is aware of the results of the last Jackson County election for Jackson County Court Clerk, which her former boss, and accussed murderer, Jerry Dean, lost to his opponent, Donald “Duck” Morris, by a margin of nearly two to one.

The funny thing is, while Dean was in jail awaiting trial for the murder of Ms. Marcum- who he was accussed of gunning down in her garage after she, his former employee, had filed a sexual harrassment lawsuit against him – he felt obliged to yet run for re-elction to the post he had held for several terms, and in which he was a well like and respected public figure. Yet, even though he was acquitted of the murder, even taking the stand in his own defense, he lost his bid for re-election by a considerably smaller margin.

Then, the anguish and controversy was still fresh in the publics mind. This last time out, he was certain he would be redeemed, and an acquaintance remarked on camera, that people would forget about it eventually. I guess this theory was based on the cliche’ that Americans are a forgiving people, that voters have short memories.

But the voters memories in this case evidently weren’t that short, and they are not that forgiving. Yet, it was not probably so much the suspicous circumstances of the yet unsolved murder, or even the affair, as it is the crassness of this run for office so relatively soon. Especially seeing as how in court Dean was obliged to read a letter he had written to Ms. Marcum which laid out in no uncertain terms the facts of his interest in and sexual pursuits of her.

After all, Dean was running fo roffice in a county that voted overwhelmingly for George W. Bush, based to a large degree on the perception of a call for ethics and morality in public

If Dean expected anything other than this, I guess he got something I seriously doubt he was ever sucessful in getting from Audrey Marcum- fucked.

Audrey Marcums ex lesbian lover is now dead.... appearently of a drug overdose. I am in Jackson County, what is your interest in this story? Why do you care?

My interest in the story is due to the involvement of an elected public official, his salary paid by taxpayers, involved in an aggressive pursuit of a young female employee who turned up dead. Whether he was directly or indirectly responsible for her death, or not, the story is certainly of public interest.

Did you know any of the parties involved? I would be interested in your input, if you care to give it. It would seem to be beyond any doubt that either Dean or his son was somehow involved in Marcum's death, seeing as how the son led the police to evidence that he claims his father deposited in a lake.

The fact that Audrey Marcum was a lesbian or bi-sexual is probably irrelevant to the case, though it's too bad her former lover died. She might have been able to shed much light on the case if she had been of a mind to. I'm sure she had some ideas as to what happened.

A lot of times there are people in small communities that know things second-hand that are for the most part worthless in criminal proceedings, precisely because they are inadmissible as evidence according to the rules of the criminal justice system. Still yet, that doesn't detract from their validity as far as the truth goes.

I'm actually more suspicious of Dean's son than I am of Dean, to tell you the truth. I have an idea a lot of other people are as well. It always seemed odd to me that Dean would take his son on a fishing trip while he was in the process of disposing of evidence.

AS someone who knew Audrey most of my life and know very well Jerry Dean's long history of sexual harrassment, I'm glad that people are still monitoring this story. Jerry Dean murdered Audrey - and it's a tiny little town where loyalty runs (usually) deep. It makes perfect sense that Jerry would think his son would keep his secret and wouldn't really be beleived if he turned against him. Jerry is a big fish in a little pond who couldn't stand the thought of being humilated in public in a place where he presented himself as just a good ole boy. I've known multiple girls who worked there that were groped and subjected to Jerry's come ons for years. He was furious that she wouldn't drop the case and there were many people who know that she was afraid he was going to hurt her - she said so even just a few weeks before she died. And if anyone follows the evidence, he did it. What horrifies me is that people said later, "well, even if he did do it, she probably brought it on herself with her lifestyle and Jerry has always been a good friend to me." David Dean may be country and have a history of drug use and not much life success, but in that community - where I was raised - he is typical and really just an average guy. Jerry Dean should be in prison and so should the people involved in the case who helped him cover up what he did.

Jerry Dean killed Audrey Marcum. Everyone in town knew this then and knows it now. I am from McKee and I knew Audrey. I also knew other girls that had suffered Jerry's come ons and disgusting sexual advances for years before Audrey went public by suing him. Jerry is the typical big fish in a small pond and couldn't stand the idea that she was going to go public and humilate him by showing the county that his public image of good ole boy was fake. Audrey was afraid of Jerry and told several people in the months and weeks prior to her murder that he was going to try to get her. I knew DAvid Dean too and while he is a small town country boy who has a history of drug use and ne'er do well attitude, Jerry is the person with the motive agaist audrey and the person who had been threatening her for months. In a place like McKee, you'd be crazy to accuse someone like Jerry if it weren't true. Jerry thought David, his son, would stand by him or would never be believed if he told the truth. I'm disgusted that Jerry is free. He should be in prison. Any rational person who knew that story and read the trial transcripts or listened to the trial would have little doubt of that.

Hi, roses. Do you know what the name was of Audrey's "lesbian lover", as Ivy put it? I'd like to do a follow-up post about this, if I can find a link to a newspaper story about her death.

As for Dean, I can't say one way or another. A jury found him not guilty, which just means they didn't think they had enough hard evidence to prove the state's case against him (not necessarily that he was innocent).

Her name was Randi J. Marcum.

you have got to be kidding me said...

Audrey was my favorite cousin. Oh and by the way, I am NOT from Jackson Co. I am from Lexington and so was Audrey originally. She moved there when she was about 8 years old. I was 9, it was a sad day when she moved away. Anyway, It still hurts me that my dear cousin Audrey's life was robbed from her by Jerry Wayne Dean. I was in the courtroom during the trial. I even talked to David Dean. Any child would not testify against their own father unless the man was guilty!!! Back to Audrey, she was a sweet person. Nothing that the defense team lead everyone to believe to inflict "reasonable doubt" in the jury pool. Oh and as far as her lifestyle, irrelevant. She did not cause herself to be gunned down. She was "good people". I am not bitter anymore and have learned to let it rest. It was hard to see my Aunt Nellie (Doodle) go through the shock and pain of losing Audrey. Like the saying goes, parents are not supposed to bury their kids. My aunt was very ill in the first place and I believe a part of her died when Audrey was laid to rest. To the person that shot Audrey like a freaking coward with a high powered riffle, you will get a big helping of justice one day by our creator.

Sandi-I am very sorry for your loss.

You say she was shot with a high-powered rifle? I thought it was a pistol of some sort, but then again, it's been a few years since I followed this story. If it was a high-powered rifle, then the person that shot her probably wasn't actually in the garage with her when he shot her, but may have shot her from a relatively safe vantage point outside, maybe even not on the property.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume a child wouldn't give false testimony against a parent. There are children who will kill their parents, and parents their children, so you can't totally discount that possibility.

I am not saying this to defend Jerry Dean, who is obviously a piece of garbage regardless of his guilt or innocence in your cousin's murder. He may have also hired someone to do it. Someone like the son, but also maybe somebody else. You'd be surprised what some people would do for one or two thousand dollars, or even less than that.

OK, I have followed this story since it started. One thing has always puzzled me:

Doug Marcum was Audrey Marcum's ex-husband, an ex that had married and divorced her three different times. They had been out together the night of the murder but, had traveled to a meeting place in different vehicles. They were also headed back to the same place, the house they once or currently shared. At the time of the murder, it was reported that Doug Marcum asked Audrey to stop at Dairy Queen and purchase the ice cream for them both and meet him at the house.

THIS gave Doug Marcum time to get to the house first, obtain the rifle, and plant himself across the road from Audrey's house and wait on her to arrive with the ice cream. This sounds certainly more plausible than the theory the prosecution and family members of Ms. Marcum claim.

Wait a minute, was her ex-husband related to Randi Marcum, who was Audrey's alleged "lesbian lover"? This thing is getting more and more twisted. Keep in touch with me on this "anonymous", and let me know anything you learn. I'm assuming you're from the area. You will have noticed others from the area, or who knew Audrey, have commented here as well. This is a case that can and should be solved.

I don't really know if anyone will read this. I don't know if anyone will care. Audrey Marcum was a dear friend to my mom, my brother, and me. I was in 4th grade at McKee Elementary at the time of her death. The last time I ever saw her was when she came to my dance team competition that was being held on a Friday at the high school. After we had received our trophies, she came over to me and gave me the biggest hug I had ever gotten from her. She looked me straight in the eye and said that she loved me and that she had to go now. I hugged her one more time and that was it.... I was 9 years old. I've since moved far away and have started a family of my own. And yet, not a day goes by that I don't think of her. Anytime that she would babysit my brother and me, we would all watch Dennis the Menace and eat popcorn. She will never be gone for me. I've had nightmares of her death ever since the day my mom told me what happened. Vivid screaming and images and then black. I met Jerry Dean a time or two when I was little, and I was always disgusted by his presences. Small children have a great judge of character, right? I just felt the need to post my memories because I can't talk about it with anyone around me. They don't understand. If I went back to my hometown of McKee on the other hand, I would be hugged and told that they feel the same way. She was loved. She was a beautiful person inside and out. I look forward to the day that Jerry Dean dies. Not a soul that knows what he did will be there. That is the justice she deserves. R.I.P Audrey. We all miss you. You know who we are.
