It's Really All Quite Simple

This post by Rufus over on Grad Student Madness is a perfect illustration of why, when I hear American politicians-and yes, this includes my new gal crush Sarah Palin-wax on about the evils and dangers of Russia and the resurgent "Russian Empire", my reaction is a great big old-

YAAAAAAAWWWWWWNNNNNNNNNN!

That's my reaction when I'm in a good mood, mind you.

Before I continue, let me point out the Democrats are not one iota better in this case. In fact, they are worse. At least the Republicans want us to lead NATO and our European "allies" that make it up, whereas Democrats, if the truth were known, want to make us de facto members of the fucking EU.

Let's take this one step at a time, kiddies. You're being conned. This whole deal is an attempt to insure increased funding for NATO and from there, increased sells of weapons systems from our own manufacturers, yes, but evidently also from Israel.

In the meantime, this ill-advised attempt to draw Georgia into the framework of NATO is nothing more than a first step toward membership in the EU. I encourage you to click on the link and take a good long look at just what the EU is really all about.

In case you don't want to, I'll tell you anyway. They're going to ban "sexist advertising". Let me explain how this process works. To do so, we'll use Rufus's example of how they might ban an advertisement that depicts a man out washing the car while the woman of the house, his wife, is inside cooking supper. They might do so on the grounds that this is encouraging "sexist stereotyping".

Bear in mind, it would be bad enough if the governments of England and France, for example, passed such a crazy law. However, this isn't even that benign. What is happening here is a bunch of ivory tower bureaucrats in Brussels might well pass this insane law, at which point England and France, and all other signatory members of the EU, will be obliged to adhere to it. This would include Georgia, in the event they become a member of the EU, which they evidently want to be, even though they have to know all this.

Now, I want to ask all my conservative and libertarian friends one simple, straightforward question. If Russia were to swoop through Europe tomorrow, take over the entire fucking continent, rule it with an iron hand from that day on, and put every current leader of the EU to death-

Do you see now why I don't give a big flying fuck?

There isn't any instance in history going back 3000 years where there was peace in Europe for longer than 30 years.

There were 34 seperate wars in Europe in the 20th Century alone.

Europeans are the most barbaric people on the planet.

Perhaps one day, Americans will impart Western Civilization to Europe.

But I think we'll have better luck with the Middle East.

[I include Russia as a European nation]

The Eastern European nations want to join the EU for economic reasons. Membership lets them by and sell within the Union without tariffs and it lets their citizens go to other member nations to find work.

They are absolutely not on the same page with the Old European nations regarding the US, Russia and the war on terror.

This is why I think that letting them into the EU and NATO is a good thing. They will be able to pull the Union and the Alliance in a pro-US direction.

Lemuel-

"it lets their citizens go to other member nations to find work."

I agree that by and large they (the Eastern European nations) are our friends. Why not let them come here if they want to go to some other country to find work? They can get training here and experience and add to our own economy, after which they can either stay here if they prefer, or they can go back and assist in further contributing to their country's development.

Why should Germany, France, and Britain act as brain drains of the entire continent of Europe. They aren't going to give those countries anything back in return, at least not in the long run. The EU is a house of cards and when it falls, its going to take all member nations down with it.

So they have a shared economy and currency and various economic agreements. That and certain basic democratic principles is fine as far as it goes. What does all that have to do with whether or not somebody in Dublin is or is not allowed to have a cigarette when he goes out to a bar?

I know that might seem like a minor thing but its symptomatic of the larger problem within the EU. It is controlled by the same plethora of special interest groups, the same kind against which you rightly rail against here in the US.

There is no such thing as a conservative European, at least not in the West, nor for that matter Australia. The former Prime Minister in Australia, whose name I forget, is as conservative as they come by most international standards. Yet, he railed to the heavens about our gun rights when we had a killing at I think Virginia Tech.

Seriously, Lem, think about this. These guys, and I'm talking here about the so-called "conservatives", make John McCain look like Barry Goldwater.

They are not now and will never be our friends, and for Eastern European nations to throw in with them is a clear indication to me that, while they might be our friends now, given another twenty years (or less) they might not seem so friendly.

Russia might be more overtly dangerous, but the EU is far more insidious, and in my view far more dangerous in the long haul. That is especially true seeing as that they are the ones that have us by the balls.
